Lighting designers are appointed for any big event, music concerts, music launch, live performance or for theater production. Their prime job is to decide how lighting will be used to give effect to any occasion. Lighting designers earn a lucrative salary, however, their salary largely depends on if they work in a union or not. Take a look on the income of various types of lighting designers.

Average Salary of lighting designers

A job portal reported that in the year 2011, the average pay for a lighting designer was $62,000. Moreover, in the New York, it was $73,000. It is because of a large number of live performances and music concerts organized there. However, in Florida and Pennsylvania, the annual average pay is around $57,000 and $60,000.


Pay Package of Union Lighting Designers

For union lighting designers, the fee is fixed by United Scenic Artists. With the combined bargaining contract, designers can earn fee per show. United Scenic Artists charge around $4,000 to $5,000.

Pay Scale of Nonunion Lighting Designers

Generally, nonunion lighting designers do not work in union; they work in small professional or Community Theater. Their fee ranges from $500 to $4,500 and they also charge fee per show. Since, there is no pay regulation for these lighting designers; they also work on paid stipends.

Income of Music Concert Lighting Designers


Music concert lighting designers work solely for music concerts and artist life performance. Generally, for non unions there are no guidelines on range of salary. Their salary may range from $500 to $800 per week during 2008.


However, it is noted that designers with more experience demand high salaries, as they possess deep knowledge about lighting and decoration.
